Condition/Description: Offered here is an antique, Persian Karabagh runner that was hand made in Iran of 100 percent natural wool on a cotton foundation. This rug is 80+ years old, has full wool piles and is in excellent condition for its age. This runner is made up of a dramatic succession of five large, boldly articulated geometric medallions, alternating in deep chocolate-brown and saturated madder-red tones against a warm camel/ivory field. This stacked-medallion format, strong angular drawing and vigorous tribal ornament are closely associated with collectible Caucasian village weaving. Comparable antique Karabagh and Kazak runners are documented with similar multi-medallion compositions and strong geometric vocabulary. The palette is especially attractive, combining madder and brick reds, rich cobalt and indigo blues, ivory, camel, golden yellow, chocolate brown and touches of soft rose. FLAT RATE SHIPPING OF $75.00 FOR THIS RUG WITHIN THE CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Flat rate shipping is billed separately after the invoice has been paid.

In design, Karabagh rugs are similar to  Kazak rugs. But you find many motifs and elements that are unique to the area as well. This Caucasian rug is from the southeastern area of the Caucasus Mountains, which is perfect for producing wool that is soft and durable. This area of the world is isolated and remote. These tribal carpets were woven using only what was available to them in the local area. It would not be until the 1870s when the Transcaucasian Railway would allow the rest of the world to see these beautiful rugs. The area rugs of this region use a distinctive technique with two rows of weft between each row of knots. This gives them extra strength and highlights the utilitarian nature of these pieces. These Karabagh rugs were created for warmth and protection against the harsh elements. In our modern homes, this creates a soft, warm piece that adds an element of coziness to the room. Caucasian Karabagh rugs are beautiful, and they are a rare find because they represents a people and culture that pretty much were untouched by the modern world. These Karabagh rugs are for people who are looking to buy rugs that are more tribal in look and feel.
