Condition/Description: Vintage Persian Shiraz rug was hand knotted in Iran of 100 percent natural wool on a wool foundation. The rug is at least 60+ years old, has full to medium wool piles and is in excellent condition for its age. This rug was made with excellent quality. No repairs, very soft and showing some signs of abrash (uneven fading) due to the use of antiquated vegetable dyes. This rug was acquired from a Richmond Virginia estate and still has the Iranian cloth label on the underside (see picture). There are several animals woven into this rug. The Shiraz rug is a Persian rug that is made in Iranian city of Shiraz, and its surrounding villages. Designs tend to come from settled tribal weavers. Since the weavers are using fixed looms, the rugs tend to be larger and often coarser than their tribal counterparts. Shiraz rugs are not often very finely knotted, with both Qashqai and Abadeh, both having a finer knot. Shiraz utilizes the Persian knot. Shiraz carpets feature the characteristic design of a diamond lozenge, interspersed with geometric patterns. Woven into their borders you find smaller bands, encompassing a larger band with palm and pine leaf designs. Other rugs sometimes portray a white or blue horse, accompanied by nightingales in angular shapes. These rugs characteristic designs serve to give them an old-world appeal and promote their exclusivity. The Shiraz carpet is the only rug to depict nightingales, which are shown as angular-shaped birds. These birds are said to symbolize contentment and happiness.
