A Savonnerie rug is a type of luxury, hand-knotted pile carpet that originated in France during the 17th century, famously produced for French royalty at a former soap factory (hence the name savonnerie, meaning "soap factory"). Known for their sophisticated Neoclassical, Baroque, and Rococo designs, these rugs feature dense floral motifs, grand central medallions, architectural framing, and soft pastel or deep rich color palettes. Unlike flat-woven Aubusson carpets, Savonnerie rugs have a thick, plush wool pile cut to varying heights to give the ornate designs a distinct three-dimensional effect. While authentic antique French pieces are rare collector's items fetching tens of thousands of dollars, high-quality modern reproductions are widely crafted using hand knotted wool to capture the same regal aesthetic.
