Inventory #: 26-748 - $400.00
Impressive mid-19th century American engraved portrait of Henry Clay (1777–1852), the legendary Kentucky statesman, Speaker of the House, U.S. Senator, Secretary of State, presidential candidate and one of the most influential political figures of antebellum America. A particularly decorative example of 19th-century American political portraiture, distinguished by its elaborate engraved surround, miniature biographical scenes, patriotic symbolism and prominent facsimile “H. Clay” signature beneath the portrait. Known to history as “The Great Compromiser,” Henry Clay played a defining role in American government during the first half of the 19th century. His commanding presence in Congress, advocacy of the “American System,” and involvement in the great political compromises of his era established him among the towering figures of early American political history. The engraving exhibits exceptionally fine line work throughout, particularly evident in Clay's face, clothing and the remarkably intricate miniature scenes surrounding the central portrait. The large “H. Clay” signature is a facsimile incorporated into the printed composition and is not represented as an original autograph. This piece is matted and framed under acrylic in a wooden frame. With frame, it measures 13 inches x 16 inches. Acquired from a Washington DC estate.
