Offered here is a striking Erte (Romain de Tirtoff, Russian-French, 1892–1990) Serigraph titled Manhattan Mary IV, 1989. This hand-signed, numbered, limited-edition color serigraph from one of the most recognizable masters of Art Deco design. Pencil signed Erte in the lower right and individually numbered 130 of 300 (lower left). Published references identify Manhattan Mary IV as an original 1989 serigraph, issued in an edition of only 300 impressions. This is a superb expression of Erte’s celebrated fusion of fashion, theater and Art Deco glamor, the composition presents an elongated, elegantly poised female figure enveloped in a dramatic silver to gray costume with an extravagant layered collar and rhythmic rose, pinkish diamond motifs. Her stylized face, elongated silhouette and delicately pointed shoes are quintessential Erte. Behind her, a bold architectural arrangement of deep black and warm terracotta geometric forms creates a powerful harlequin-like backdrop, giving the image exceptional graphic presence. The sophisticated geometry and restrained palette make Manhattan Mary IV particularly successful as both a collectible graphic work and a statement piece for an interior. The juxtaposition of black, terracotta, silver-gray, rose and gold gives the composition a remarkably contemporary quality despite its unmistakable Art Deco vocabulary. It would be equally compelling in a sophisticated living room, dressing room, luxury bedroom, executive office, cocktail lounge or collection of Art Deco and fashion related art. This piece is double matted and framed under acrylic in a bold, golden frame. With frame, it measures 25 inches x 29.5 inches. This piece was acquired from a Metro Washington DC estate.
