Condition/Description: Offered here is an antique Mansion sized, signed, Persian Serapi pictorial rug was hand knotted in Iran of 100 percent natural wool on a cotton foundation. This rug is 110-130+ years old, has medium to low wool piles and is in excellent condition for its age. This rug’s composition centers on a richly detailed midnight-blue geometric medallion anchored by elongated pendants, floating within an expansive field of warm oxidized madder red. The design is framed by soft blue-gray stepped corner spandrels filled with stylized botanical and tribal motifs, while an intricate series of classic Heriz borders provides architectural balance. The naturally aged vegetable-dyed palette has mellowed beautifully, creating the sophisticated, understated elegance sought after in today's luxury interiors. A woven Persian workshop signature further enhances its authenticity and collectible appeal. We have gotten 3 different answers to the translation. The cartouche is located near the center, and all three translations lean toward the name of the weaver or the workshop. There are also several figures woven into the rug, including two persons and several animals. No visible holes or repairs. This rug came from a Central Virginia estate. Opportunities to acquire authentic mansion-sized Serapi carpets of this quality are increasingly uncommon, making this an exceptional offering for discerning collectors, designers, and investors alike. FLAT RATE SHIPPING OF $375.00 FOR THIS RUG WITHIN THE CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Flat rate shipping is billed separately after the invoice has been paid.
Persian Serapi rugs were produced in the Iranian province of Eastern Azerbaijan and the area surrounding Heriz. The village of Serab, where Serapi rugs are generally attributed to, is located south of the region responsible for the eponymous Heriz rugs (the region of North West Persia) and less than 80 miles east of Tabriz. The term Serapi is often applied to the finest antique rug examples from the Heriz area. However, the Serapi designation is a hot topic that is contested by many experts. Nevertheless, Serapi rugs particularly those produced prior to the turn of the 20th century are in high demand today. Serapi rugs are chic, often with open designs. These unique rugs represent a wonderful combination of tribal patterns from the Caucasus along with early Safavid influences. Serapi rugs feature a variety of symbolic patterns rendered in a combination of light colors, neutrals and stark camel brown. Antique Serapi rugs were made by small workshops and families, which resulted in formal Persian carpets as well as those with rustic tribal influences. Production methods contributed to the characteristic abrash that adds a textural appearance to the stark field and contrasting decorations seen in many Serapi rugs. Serapi rugs feature clear colors, creamy un-dyed fleece beautifully tempered reds, warm earth tones and concentrated blues. Largely produced before 1910, antique Serapi rugs feature rustic patterns.
