Condition/Description: Antique Persian Hamadan runner was hand knotted in Iran of 100 percent natural wool on a cotton foundation. This rug is 80+ years old, has medium wool piles and is in excellent condition for its age. This runner has a progression of bold floral and geometric forms in charcoal brown, ivory, slate blue, turquoise, olive and soft rose, surrounded by repeated boteh or paisley devices and a constellation of small multicolored rosettes. Especially desirable are the rug's clearly recognizable stylized quadrupeds woven directly into the field. These charming animal figures transform the runner from a conventional decorative carpet into a piece of Persian folk art with genuine visual personality. Animal and human figures are documented features of some Hamadan-region runners and are particularly sought after for the individuality they bring to village weaving. One of the most visually successful aspects of this rug is its ivory-ground main border, filled with a procession of colorful stylized floral and geometric motifs. The pale border creates excellent contrast against the red central field and is further framed by dark chocolate and turquoise-accented guard borders. The overall palette has a beautifully collected appearance rather than the limited coloration of modern decorative reproductions. This rug came from an established rug merchant. Clean and ready to be enjoyed. FLAT RATE SHIPPING OF $50.00 FOR THIS RUG WITHIN THE CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Flat rate shipping is billed separately after the invoice has been paid.

Hamadan is a city situated in the western part of Iran, 300 kilometers west of Teheran. It is one of the world’s oldest cities and is mentioned under the name of Ekbatana in the Bible. The city is a center for trading with carpets that are manufactured in the hundreds from nearby villages and cities. The best of these carpets are sold under their own names such as Nahavand, Tuiserkan, Malayer and Hosseinabad. Simpler carpets from the area are sold under the generic term Hamadan. They are easily recognized with their typical patterns and sizes. Among individual patterns the Herati is the most common pattern. The colors are dominated by different nuances of indigo blue and madder red. Older Hamadan carpets can be extremely attractive products. In the city of Hamadan, carpets were manufactured with a considerably higher quality.
