Engraved by noted British engraver William Holl the Younger (1807–1871) after the historic portrait associated with Daniel Mytens, the work was published in London on December 1, 1829, by Harding & Lepard, Pall Mall East. The original engraved inscription reads JOHN SELDEN. OB. 1654. FROM THE ORIGINAL OF MYTENS, IN THE BODLEIAN LIBRARY, OXFORD. Below the portrait appears Engraved by W. Holl. Nearly two centuries old, the engraving displays the remarkable precision of early 19th-century British portrait engraving. Exceptionally fine linear work and cross-hatching articulate Selden's face, flowing hair, period clothing and atmospheric background, creating the rich tonal depth associated with the finest engraved portraits of the era. The subject adds considerable historical interest. John Selden was one of the most important English legal and constitutional scholars of the 17th century, as well as a Member of Parliament, historian and antiquarian. His intellectual legacy places this portrait naturally within collections devoted to British history, law, Oxford, literature, scholarship and the development of constitutional government. The engraving has been given extraordinary decorative presence through its substantial architectural frame, featuring a broad warm reddish-brown faux-grained surface dramatically accented by distressed gilt borders and molding. The beautifully timeworn gilding provides precisely the layered, collected character sought after in today's finest interiors. Rather than appearing newly decorated, the piece has the visual authority of something acquired from an old European library, country house or scholar's study. We believe this piece is part of the Zorin Collection. We recognize the handwriting on the verso as belonging to Zorin, or someone on his staff. George Zorin was a respected New York based dealer, specializing in Old Master and 19th-century prints. Zorin’s holdings, built over several decades, are widely recognized in the American print trade. This piece is matted and framed under acrylic. With frame, it measures 14.5 inches x 16.5 inches.

https://rug-auction.com/products/1829-william-holl-engraving-of-john-selden-after-daniel-mytens-bodleian-library-oxford-14-5in-x-16-5in-37cm-x-42cm
